President Dr Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is the 8th President of the Republic of Maldives. He took his oath of office on 17th November 2023.

President Dr. Muizzu received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering from University of Leeds, United Kingdom. During his academic life, Dr. Muizzu always stood out as a studious, well-versed student who achieved academic excellence, leading up to his doctorate. He has also attained Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from America’s Project Management Institute (PMI).

President Dr. Muizzu’s service to the government began in March 1998 with his first job as a Construction and Public Works Planning Technician Trainee at Ministry of Construction and Public Works. In addition to serving the government, Dr. Muizzu also served in some key positions in the private sector. He also held key positions at political parties in the Maldives.

His years as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure from February 2012 to November 2018 marked unprecedented success in the implementation of housing projects in Maldivian history. The Maldives also witnessed the construction of the tallest buildings and biggest infrastructure projects under Dr. Muizzu’s leadership, with multiple road projects and land reclamation projects coming to fruition. The Sinamale’ Bridge, Dharumavantha Hospital, Hiya Flats, Hahdhunmathi main road, Male’ Ring Road, Male’ Industrial Village, and reclamation of Hulhumale’ Phase II stand as a testimony to Dr. Muizzu’s visionary leadership and service to the nation. With the completion of multiple parks and public spaces under his supervision, Dr. Muizzu truly transformed the face of Male’ City. During his time as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Muizzu saw the successful completion of multiple land reclamation, harbour development, and water and sewerage projects across the atolls.

President Dr. Muizzu is also the first Mayor of Male’ City to be elected through a direct vote of the residents in the capital Male’ City. In his two years and six months as Male’ City Mayor from 17 May 2021 to 17 November 2023, Dr. Muizzu worked tirelessly to transform Male’ City into a greener, more pleasant environment. His efforts as Male’ City Mayor has been well received by the public. During his mayorship, Dr. Muizzu led by example, working closely with the citizens in the capital, making house calls to gain a better understanding of the living conditions in the city, and actively advocating for decentralization and empowerment of local bodies.

President Dr. Muizzu, during his presidential campaign, pledged to ensure the freedom and security of Maldivians, justice, and equality among people. He pledged to uphold the values of Islam and patriotism, and to bring a new era of development to the nation. In his first address to the public as President of the Maldives, Dr. Muizzu reiterated his commitment to his pledges.

Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef

Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef took oath of office on 17 November 2023. Prior to that, he filled the role of Fares Maathoda consituency’s Member of Parliament.

In his 9 years in the parliament, Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef served his constituency with diligence and dedication.

Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef began his government service in 2004 as the Secretary at Hulhumale’ Hospital. Since then, Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef has served at the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Human Rights, and at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. He also served the private sector in multiple companies and worked as a lecturer at Family Court to educate the public on marriage and familial relations.

He is known for his commitment to sports and social development in the Maldives. Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef also served as the Senior Vice President of Football Association of Maldives (FAM). In addition to playing sports during his academic life, he also participated in various literary activities and events.

Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef is an Al-Azhar University, Egypt, alumni who obtained his Undergraduate Degree in Social Service and Community Development. He received his Master of Business Administration from Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom. The Vice President is well-versed in both English and Arabic languages.
 

Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer

Moosa Zameer was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives on 17 November 2023, by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. 

Minister Zameer brings to the job his astute experiences as a former Minister, and a former Member of Parliament, and a proven track-record, particularly on negotiating and securing development and private sector financing from a multitude of sources. 

At a young age, Minister Zameer was introduced into the world of business, where he was the Managing Director for several successful private companies, specialising in the marine sector, tourism and hospitality, and fuel supply. He took these experiences and the skills he acquired, to Maldivian politics and later, to the Parliament and the Executive. 

Minister Zameer’s political career began in 2008. He was a founding member of the People’s Alliance (PA), serving as its Vice President and representing the Party in various domestic and international forums, events, and media engagements. In 2011, Minister Zameer joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the successor to the now-defunct PA. As the Vice President of PPM, he was instrumental in the Party’s operations, including its foreign relations, establishing links with political parties and international organisations, in various countries, including India, Malaysia and China. He was an active contributor to the development of the party’s manifesto, agenda, and strategy. 

Minister Zameer was a Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2014. During his term, he played a leading role in the formulation of bills relating to finance, economy, and national security. He was the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs from 2011 to 2014, a Member of The Standing Committee on National Security Services from 2009 to 2014, and a Member of the Standing Committee on Petitions from 2009 to 2014. He was also the Chairman of the Maldives-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group, and represented the Parliament in several high-level meetings, events, and exchanges with parliamentarians and officials of various countries, as well as in multilateral bodies such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the United Nations. 

As the Minister of Tourism from 28 October 2015 to 17 November 2018, Minister Zameer oversaw the remarkable growth and diversification of the Maldivian tourism sector – the main source of income and employment for the Maldives. He oversaw the opening of four domestic airports, 7 hotels, 55 new resorts, and almost 500 guesthouses across the country under his tenure. He was instrumental in securing new foreign investments worth over $1 billion and establishing and strengthening partnerships with regional and international organisations and bodies.
