Foreign Minister meets with his counterpart of China

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid met with His Excellency Wang Yi, State Counsellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, in Beijing today.

During the meeting, held at, Minister Shahid and Minister Wang Yi exchanged views of further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries. Minister Wang warmly welcomed the Minister to China and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to further strengthen the historic and friendly relations between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Shahid congratulated Government of China and its people on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Discussions were held on furthering the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development.

Minister Shahid reiterated Maldives support to the Belt and Road Initiative and One-China policy. Minister Wang recognized the importance of furthering cooperation through the initiative for benefit of the two countries. Foreign Minister Shahid acknowledged and thanked the Government of China for the continued support to the Maldives throughout its development journey, which is prominently featured across many areas, notably housing and infrastructure and human resource development.

Minister Shahid is on an official visit to China from 19-20 September 2019. The Minister is accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary, Multilateral Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Director, Communications Mr. Miuvaan Mohamed and Assistant Director Maryam Bassama Farooq.
