China has generously provided Maldives with a large amount of aid since 1972. The Chinese government has not only offered grants, but has also assisted the Maldives on a number of projects. For example, the Chinese government has supported The Housing Projects which have helped to significantly relieve the pressures of lack of housing in the capital, as well as a range of other projects such as the construction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building and of the National Museum. In fact, President Nasheed and Chairman Wu agreed in May 2011 to complete the details of the construction of a further 1500 housing units, which will be built with Chinese assistance. Additionally, the close connection between the Maldives and China was shown through the funding and support offered after the tragic Asian tsunami in 2004.
